Job Description

Graduate Teaching Assistant

Want primary experience that builds real classroom skill fast?

Support pupils through focused 1:1 and small-group work across KS1 and KS2.

*** Graduate Teaching Assistant
*** Immediate start until July 2026
*** £82 - £101 per day
*** ‘Good’ 3-form-entry primary school, Hodge Hill
*** 1:1 and small group support across KS1 & KS2

The Role:
You will deliver tightly planned intervention that links directly to class teaching. You will pre-teach key vocabulary and methods, model worked examples, and use retrieval and timed practice to secure fluency in reading, writing and maths. You will check understanding with quick diagnostics, fix misconceptions early, and feed gains back into live lessons so pupils return ready to engage. You will run morning reading fluency, sentence-building and spelling routines, then afternoon number fluency and problem-solving practice that follow the school’s methods. You will keep concise notes after each session, update simple trackers, and agree next steps with the class teacher so your support stays aligned with upcoming units and assessments. You will uphold clear routines, follow safeguarding and behaviour procedures, and help maintain calm starts and smooth transitions.

The Candidate & Requirements:
You communicate clearly, stay organised in busy classrooms and explain ideas in small, manageable steps. You notice gaps early, keep sessions purposeful and build independence without over-prompting.

  • Degree, 2:2 or above in any subject.
  • Communication, strong written and spoken English.
  • Enhanced DBS, held already or willingness to obtain.
  • Desire to work in education or with children, genuine commitment to inclusion and progress.
  • Experience working with children, relevant experience is desirable but not essential.

The School:
This ‘Good’ Hodge Hill primary is three-form entry with calm, predictable routines from arrival to home time. Reading has protected daily time, with systematic phonics and matched reading lower down and guided reading across KS2. Maths is sequenced in small, connected steps with regular low-stakes checks so methods are consistent between classes. Year teams co-plan and share model texts, worked examples and ready-to-use intervention packs, which keeps preparation efficient and ensures your sessions dovetail with the curriculum. New colleagues receive a structured induction, weekly bite-size CPD and short coaching drop-ins with precise, usable next moves, giving you strong conditions to show impact quickly and build evidence for initial teacher training.
