Job Description

“Life is like riding a bicycle.  To keep your balance, you must keep moving.”  Albert Einstein.

Sheridan Maine is partnering with a forward-thinking organisation based near Gloucester, currently seeking a technically strong Financial Accountant to join their growing team. This is an excellent opportunity for a finance professional looking to take ownership of the month-end process and drive improvements across financial operations.

This hands-on role is well-suited to someone with a solid technical background, ideally with experience in audit or month-end reporting, who enjoys collaborating across departments and contributing to ongoing process optimisation.

Responsibilities of the Financial Accountant will include:
  • Lead the month-end close process, including journal entries, reconciliations, and documentation (revenue, prepayments, accruals, fixed assets, inventory).
  • Deliver monthly management reporting with insightful variance analysis and commentary.
  • Ensure balance sheet integrity through accurate reconciliations and intercompany alignment.
  • Apply appropriate revenue recognition under IFRS 15 and UK GAAP.
  • Oversee inventory accounting and coordinate quarterly stock counts.
  • Reconcile key control accounts (e.g., payroll, VAT, receivables/payables).
  • Manage VAT, PAYE, and NI submissions, ensuring compliance with all statutory deadlines.
  • Assist in preparing year-end statutory accounts and support external audits.
  • Collaborate with tax advisors on R&D tax relief, grants, and corporation tax filings.
  • Maintain a compliance calendar to monitor all financial deadlines and obligations.
  • Support half-year and year-end group reporting and consolidation activities.
  • Partner with global finance teams to ensure alignment on reporting and timelines.
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and long-term planning cycles.
  • Prepare cash flow forecasts and working capital reports for strategic decision-making.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to allocate project costs and overheads accurately.
  • Enhance financial systems (currently Odoo and Excel) and drive automation initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline and improve the month-end and reporting processes.
  • Act as a key liaison for internal stakeholders seeking financial insight and support.

The successful Financial Accountant:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or equivalent.
  • Part-qualified or newly qualified (ACA, ACCA, or CIMA).
  • At least 2 years’ experience in a finance role with end-to-end month-end responsibility.
  • Ideally trained in audit, with strong technical knowledge of UK GAAP and IFRS.

What’s on Offer:
  • Hybrid working – 2 days per week from home.
  • Study support available (ACA, ACCA, or CIMA).
  • On-site parking.
  • Varied, hands-on role within a collaborative and supportive organisation.
